This Day In the Civil War – Battle in Tennessee

jameslongstreetOne-hundred fifty years ago, on January 17, 1864, a small battle occurred near Dandridge, Tennessee. Advancing Federal forces sought to control the railroad near Dandridge. Confederate forces had temporarily withdrawn, but on the 17th General James Longstreet sent a stronger force hoping to re-take the area. His forces  drove the Union forces back, but they were unable to pursue due to a lack of equipment and supplies. The Union forces withdrew during the night.
