Union Navy Plan Abandoned

Not a lot to report about this day in Civil War history, but I did learn that a Union Navy plan to work gunships and troops around the waterways behind Vicksburg was officially abandoned on Sunday, March 22, 1863.

Seems the boats couldn’t navigate the twisting jungle waters. Union Flag Officer Foote, did however, uncover large quantities of corn and cotton. The edibles were confiscated or destroyed, and the quantity of cotton enabled financing for a new gunboat, as well as horses, mules and cattle to serve the Union cause.
