Really interesting, Denise! I try to sprinkle in a bit of language popular to the time I'm writing, but I've never come across this one.

But it makes sense, especially for gamblers to use. The hero in my WIP is a gambler in 1870. I might just use this one.

My great grandfather was Joseph Francis Hassell. He
is believed to have been born in Charleston SC
in 1828. We have some hint that he was"educated"in Philadelpha( boarding schools ?) He was a dentist --graduate of St
Louis University--practiced in Lexington MO. He
stubornly refused to reveal any information about his
parents to his son or to any relative. He had a sister
named Ann(e) K Hassell. She married Thomas
Joseph Albright. Any hint or shred of info w/b apprec.
deeply appreciated

I agree Suzi! I love using Victorian phrasing. And I think readers do too as well. I suspect is one of the many things readers like about Georgette Heyer's regencies.

I love that word and will certianly be trying to use it somewhere. Although, no one will know what it means. But that's half the fun, isn't it?

Thanks, Susan! No, I didn't. It feels more Western to me. I have a couple westerns under the bed so to speak, so I might at some point try it out in them. I have tried to pronounce this word, but I get tongue-tied! Still, someone did, because it was used an awful lot.

Dee, I loved the dialogue in both Wicked Woman and The Wild One.

Did you actually use that word in either of them. It looks like quite a mouthful!

Thanks. I quit writing for three years because I was also dealing with infertility and it was all just too crushing. I took it up again because I needed something to do.

Was anyone at Cedar Creek last week? Going to Gettysburg next month?
